A child sits at a table writing in a notebook, supported by two adults positioned on either side—one appearing to represent a teacher and the other a parent. A laptop and books are on the table, and the setting combines elements of both a classroom and a home environment, conveying collaboration around the child’s learning. Neurodiversity Pathway Service: Needs Led Approach

For:

The Needs Led Approach is a holistic approach to supporting families in a creative and empowered way. We want to work in partnership between education, health and families to improve outcomes and experiences for children and young people who may be neurodivergent.

About this service

A Needs Led Approach will usually be completed by home and school together. All education settings/ schools are able to access free training and resources to use this approach. If your child is not in an education setting, the Parent Carer forums will be able to support you to use a Needs Led Approach. Please see below for details. GPs are not usually the right people to be completing a Needs Led Approach with children and families, but they may sometimes write to us to request that we help families understand more about how to complete a Needs Led Approach.

We hope that a Needs Led Approach will help to support you/ your child. It will help everyone to understand whether an assessment will meet the needs that have been identified.

Please note we will accept any plans that school have in place to avoid duplication if this is felt appropriate. However, the documents do have to clearly demonstrate the following:

Specific actions and outcomes, coproduced with the family and child, evidence of plan-do-review (at least two reviews), discussion of what a diagnosis will or won’t mean and evidence of consent to assessment. Please send the completed observation tables and actions plans to the Single Point of Access for your area via secure email.

It is important that all paperwork sent in contains the child’s name, date of birth, address and where possible NHS number. Please note you do not need to send copies of Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs).
