Community Inpatient Units

For:

Community Inpatient Units provide specialist nursing and therapy support. Some people are admitted after a stay in an acute hospital. Others come to us to avoid needing to stay in hospital in the first place. We help you to keep or get back independence.

During your stay, our team will work with you to plan the next steps in your recovery. We may discuss returning home with support, continuing care in a community hospital, or moving to a care home if that’s what you need. Family members and friends are welcome to be part of these conversations.

About the team

A wide range of health and care professionals work in our Community Inpatient Units. Together, they help you recover after illness or injury – and return to your normal life and activities. This is sometimes called rehabilitation.

You may meet different members of the team during your stay, each with a specialist role, including doctors who oversee your medical care and treatment, registered nurses who provide day‑to‑day nursing care and support with medications, and healthcare support workers who help with personal care and daily activities. You may also work with physiotherapists who help you to improve strength, balance, mobility and confidence, and occupational therapists who help you practise everyday tasks and prepare for returning home. Therapy assistants support you with rehabilitation exercises and activities, while pharmacists and pharmacy technicians review your medicines and advise you about taking them safely. Dietitians support your nutrition and healthy eating during recovery, and cleaners, porters and catering teams help keep the ward welcoming, safe and comfortable.

Together, the team works with you and your family to make sure your stay is comfortable and you can return home safely – staying as independent as possible.
