Understanding behaviours and emotions

About the event

This webinar is designed to help parents and carers better understand what is going on for their child, especially when emotions feel big or behaviours feel challenging.

You’ll explore what emotions and behaviour really mean, and why behaviour is often a way for children to communicate stress, worry, or overwhelm when they are finding something hard. The session helps parents see behaviour as a signal, not a problem — and shows how noticing these signals can make everyday life easier over time.

The webinar gently explains how all children respond to stress in different ways, such as fight, flight, or freeze, and how these reactions can look very different from one child to another. You’ll learn why the same situation can feel easy one day and much harder the next, and how things like tiredness, hunger, sensory needs, or changes in routine can make a big difference.

You’ll also be introduced to simple, practical tools that can help you make sense of what’s happening. These include:

  • ways to spot patterns in your child’s behaviour
  • ideas for understanding what might sit under the surface
  • strategies to help reduce stress before things become overwhelming

The session shares helpful ideas, such as the “bucket” and “iceberg” examples, which many parents find useful for thinking about stress, emotions, and hidden needs. These help build a fuller picture of your child’s day, not just the moments that feel difficult.

Importantly, the webinar is reassuring and realistic. It reminds parents that there is no single fix, that change takes time, and that small adjustments can make a meaningful difference. It also highlights the importance of looking after yourself as a parent, and working alongside your child wherever possible.

This webinar is a supportive starting point. Whether you are just beginning to think about behaviour and emotions, or looking for ways to feel more confident and prepared, it offers understanding, encouragement, and clear next steps — with guidance on where to find further support if you need it.
