What you might have noticed with your ADHD medication

The questions you have about ADHD medication might be different depending on your age and where you are in life.

Children: As a parent or carer, you might have noticed changes in your child’s appetite, new sleep problems or stomach aches, or that your child is more focused than usual or sometimes too quiet.

Young people: You might be concerned about possible side effects on things like your mood, or how to remember to take your medication and manage it at school or college.

Adults: You might need advice on how to balance your medication long-term with work or caring for family, or you might need medication reviews as things in your life change.

Older adults: You might be concerned about how your ADHD medication fits with other medications you’re taking, or about any impact your medication might have on your heart health.

It’s important to remember that medication is only one way to manage your ADHD symptoms. Finding the right school, work and sleep routines, exercise, healthy eating and organisation strategies also play a big part – so if you have concerns about your medication or if your medication isn’t working for you, don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

Questions and answers

How do I know if my ADHD medication is working?
Typically, you should find it easier to focus, stay organised and manage sets of tasks throughout the day, but you shouldn’t feel “numb” or unlike yourself. If you’re unsure if you can feel your medication is working, keep notes and share them with your clinician.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
It’s best to skip the missed dose and take the next one at your usual time. Take care not to double-dose to make up for a missed one. If you find you’re missing doses often, we can help you find ways to build a medication routine that works for you.
Are the side effects normal, and when should I get help?
Some side effects like mild changes to your appetite or sleep can be common at first. If you are expecting stronger side effects, or persistent ones that are impacting your daily life, speak to our team for help.
Why has my appetite changed, and how can I manage this?
Some ADHD medications can reduce your appetite, so a change isn’t necessarily something to worry about. If you want to manage this change, eating a good breakfast before you take your first dose of the day and choosing healthy snacks during the day can help.
Can ADHD medication affect my sleep?
Yes, especially if you take a dose late in the day. If you want to limit the effect it can have on your sleep, taking your doses earlier in the day can help, as can building up good sleep habits. If your sleep problems continue, reach out to us and we’ll help you find a solution.
Is it safe to take my medication with other medicines or supplements?
You should always speak with a pharmacist or your clinician about any new medication you’ll be taking alongside your ADHD medication, as some can interact. If you have concerns, speak to our team and we’ll help you find the answers you need, or point you in the right direction if you need to speak with someone else.
How long will I need to be on ADHD medication?
We understand that the thought of taking medication for a long period of time can be stressful. With ADHD medication, the answer is different for everybody. Some people might take medication for several years. Others might only take it during certain life stages like at school or when they need more help managing their symptoms. Our team will discuss this with you during medication reviews, so you will always be in control of how long you take your medication for.
Can I drive, play sports, or drink caffeine while taking ADHD medication?
For most people, taking ADHD medication shouldn’t be a barrier to driving, playing sports or drinking caffeine. However, you may notice changes in your energy levels or focus when you start on ADHD medication, so make sure to start easing yourself in a bit at a time and keep note of any changes.
What should I do if I feel the dose is too strong or too weak?
Keep notes on what you’re experiencing and speak to your clinician during your medication review. Do not change the dose yourself – your clinician will listen to what you’re experiencing on your current dose and adjust it safely if you need a change.
Can I stop my medication during weekends, holidays, or exams?
Some people on ADHD medication do take “medication breaks” at certain times, but only after planning it with their clinician first. It’s best not to stop taking your medication suddenly, as this can cause symptoms to return.
