Community Paediatrics (Swindon)

For:

Community Paediatrics supports children and young people who may need a specialist assessment or diagnosis to help support their development or wellbeing. If you are worried about how your child is growing, learning or managing day to day, we are here to help. Our aim is to understand your child’s needs clearly and work with you to plan the right support.

About the team

Our team consists of paediatric doctors, consultant paediatricians, and specialist practitioners. We also work alongside health visitors, school nurses, therapists, teachers, and social workers.

Together, we look at the whole picture – your child’s health, development, learning and family life – to make sure support feels joined up and is right for your child.

This service is provided by Great Western Hospital.

Questions and answers

What support does the service offer?
We assess and diagnose conditions such as developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), medical issues linked to disability such as cerebral palsy and complex health needs affecting a child’s development and learning. After providing assessment and diagnosis, we’ll help you to understand the next steps.
Who might my child see?
Depending on your child’s needs and location, they might see one of the following consultant paediatrician, paediatric doctor and specialist practitioner (a specially trained nurse).
What might happen at my appointment
Once we’ve accepted your referral, we’ll arrange an appointment at a clinic close to your home. At the appointment, the doctor will take time to get to know your child and understand your concerns. Parents and carers often have lots of questions, so this is a chance to talk things through together. The doctor may ask about your child’s development and medical history, talk with you about your child’s learning, behaviour and daily life. Check your child’s height and weight and carry out a physical examination if needed. Sometimes further specialist assessments may help us understand your child’s needs more clearly. If it’s right to do so, the doctor will make a diagnosis and work with you and other professionals – such as teachers or therapists – to plan the right support for your child. We’ll make sure you feel listened to and clear about the next steps.
