Orthopaedic Interface (OIS)- (BaNES, Wiltshire)

Our Orthopaedic Interface Service provides expert assessment for people with muscle, bone and joint problems.

We help identify the cause of your symptoms, advise on the most appropriate next steps, and guide you towards the right treatment – whether that’s self-management, physiotherapy, imaging, injections, or referral to an orthopaedic surgeon. Our aim is to ensure you receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

About the team

Our team is made up of highly-trained clinicians who are experts in bone, muscle and joint conditions – including advanced physiotherapy practitioners and podiatrists.

Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners are specialist clinicians with expert training in diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal conditions. Many have further qualifications such as diplomas in injection therapy, diagnostic ultrasound and non-medical prescribing, so they can offer a wider range of assessments and treatments in one place.

We help you understand what’s really impacting your movement and work on a long-term plan for managing your pain independently.

Our support includes arranging investigations like X-rays, ultrasound scans and MRI scans, giving steroid injections to reduce your pain and swelling and referring you to other relevant health services including orthopaedic surgeons, pain clinics, and other community services e.g. physiotherapy.

We’re also set up to see you closer to home at a range of clinics and surgeries, so you won’t need to make unnecessary hospital visits.

If we are not the right service, we will help you find the right place to go. We will not leave you feeling stuck.

Questions and answers

What happens once I've been referred?
Once we have your referral, the first step is to work out which specialist can best help you with your treatment. While we do this, we’ll send you a text message letting you know the current waiting times – so you can plan for when your appointment is likely to be. Once the appointment is booked, we’ll send you a letter confirming all the details.
How long will my appointment take?
Your first appointment will usually be 30-45 minutes. Follow-up appointments are around 15-30 minutes, and these are usually done over the phone.
How can I prepare for my appointment?
Please arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment and bring a list of any medication you’re currently taking. It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing as you may need to undress slightly during the appointment (like taking off your top for a shoulder assessment).
How will I get my test results?
If you need an imaging test like an MRI or X-ray, it usually takes about two weeks for one of our radiologists to put together a report. Your clinician will then look over the report and arrange a follow up appointment to talk about the test results. We understand waiting for results can be difficult, so we aim to have them back with you as soon as possible – if you haven’t heard from us after eight weeks, do get in touch.
