IV Therapy

Our Community IV Therapy Service gives intravenous (IV) treatment outside of hospital.

You may receive treatment in a community clinic or, if suitable, in your own home. This service helps people avoid unnecessary hospital stays. It can also help people leave hospital sooner by making treatment available closer to home.

About the team

Our team includes highly skilled registered nurses, and assistant practitioners who specialise in IV therapy.

We're experienced in giving treatment safely in clinics and at home, helping you receive the care you need in a more comfortable and familar place.

We provide iron infusions in community clinics, helping reduce the need for blood transfusions, remove chemotherapy pumps once treatment has been completed and support people with self-administration of IV therapies in the community.

We work closely with hospital teams, GPs and other community services to make sure your treatment plan is followed correctly, your care is joined up and you recieve safe, high quality support.

Questions and answers

How long will I need to wait for an appointment?
Waiting times can vary but we’ll see you as soon as possible. Your community healthcare team will explain what to expect. IV therapy and central line care usually need at least 24 hours’ notice from the referring clinician. Iron infusions are usually offered within 3 weeks of receiving the referral. For IV antibiotics, you’ll be referred by a specialist team. Usually, you’ll be leaving hospital and we work to ensure your return home is safe.
Can visitors come with me to the clinic?
Visitors cannot come into the treatment room, this helps us keep the environment safe and controlled. There is a waiting area where visitors can stay while you have your treatment.
Will I be seen at home or in a clinic?
This depends on your treatment plan and the type of IV therapy you need, some treatments can be given at home. Others need to be given in a community clinic. We will talk this through with you so you know what to expect.
